About the Event

This hands-on workshop is designed for podiatrists interested in using ultrasound as part of their everyday clinical practice.

The course covers the basics of diagnostic ultrasound, including how to use the equipment, optimise image quality and scan the foot and ankle. You’ll learn to identify normal anatomy and recognise common conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and Morton’s neuroma.

The session includes practical scanning in small groups, along with clinical case examples and image interpretation. We’ll also look at how ultrasound can support clinical assessments, guide treatment decisions and when further imaging or referral may be needed.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand the principles of diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Operate and ultrasound system and optimise image quality.
  • Identify normal sonographic anatomy of the foot and ankle.
  • Recognise common MSK pathologies relevant to podiatry.
  • Perform a systematic foot and ankle ultrasound examination.
  • Understand the role and limitation of ultrasound in podiatric practice.
  • Integrating ultrasound into everyday clinical decision making.

Course Agenda

  1. Introduction to ultrasound in podiatry and where it can add value clinically
  2. Basic ultrasound principles
  3. Probe selection, handling, orientation and image optimisation
  4. Long-axis and short-axis scanning
  5. Common artefacts and mistakes
  6. A structured approach to scanning the foot
  7. Normal ultrasound anatomy
  8. Common podiatry presentations, including:
    – Plantar fasciitis
    – Achilles tendinitis
    – Posterior tibial and peroneal tendons
    – Morton’s neuroma and intermetatarsal bursitis
    – Sesamoiditis
    – Metatarsal stress reactions/fractures
  9. How ultrasound findings can complement the clinical assessment and influence management
  10. When further imaging or referral may still be required
  11. Case examples and image interpretation
