Build your confidence with ultrasound through practical, focused learning.
Introductory Ultrasound Short Courses
A series of six 2–3 hour introductory courses designed to help clinicians develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to get started with diagnostic ultrasound.
Led by Ultrana’s in-house sonographer · Small-group sessions · Hands-on learning
Start building your ultrasound skills
Getting started with ultrasound involves more than learning how to use the machine. You need to understand the image, recognise anatomy, optimise what you’re seeing and develop a consistent approach to scanning.
Our Introductory Ultrasound Short Courses break these foundational skills into six focused sessions, giving you the opportunity to build your knowledge and confidence step by step.
The courses are designed to complement one another, but you don’t have to complete them in order or attend every session. Choose the topics most relevant to you, or work through the full series.

- Hands-on scanning
02
Sonographic Anatomy for Beginners
Learn to recognise what you're seeing.
Develop an understanding of how common anatomical structures appear on ultrasound and begin correlating images with anatomy.
- Tissue echogenicity
- Muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve
- Bone and fascia
- Correlating anatomy with images
- Hands-on anatomy scanning

04
Common Ultrasound Artefacts Explained
Recognise, understand and troubleshoot.
Learn why artefacts occur, how they affect your image, and how to tell anatomy from artefact.
- Acoustic shadowing & enhancement
- Anisotropy, reverberation, mirror artefact
- Side lobe artefacts
- Reducing and correcting artefacts
05
How to Perform a Structured Ultrasound Scan
Develop a repeatable approach.
Move beyond simply finding an image and start developing a consistent process for performing an examination.
- Scan sequence & systematic examination
- Comparing structures
- Image documentation
- Avoiding common beginner mistakes
06
Beginner's Scanning Lab
Minimal lecture. Maximum hands-on practice.
Put your foundational skills into practice through guided scanning of common upper and lower limb regions.
- Shoulder · Elbow · Wrist
- Hip · Knee · Ankle · Foot
